His research interests range from the exploration and fossil fuel transport, to the production and formulation of biofuels, the characterization of non-conventional solvents (fluorinated chemicals and ionic liquids) for the development of new products and chemical processes, the characterization of biodegradable polymers and biotechnology. On this last domain he was one of the responsible people for the creation of the BSc and MSc in Biotechnology at the University of Aveiro. He is currently adressing most of its research time to the characterization and development of new applications ofr ionic liquids.

Andreia F. Sousa has been an Assistant Researcher at CICECO, University of Aveiro, Portugal, since 2020. She leads a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the development of sustainable polymers—renewable, biodegradable, recyclable, and designed for circular economy applications. Additionally, she holds an invited research appointment at CEMMPRE, University of Coimbra. Dr. Sousa’s expertise lies in Polymer and Sustainable Chemistry, with a PhD in Chemistry completed in 2011. A distinguished scientist, she has published over 60 research papers, including 3 Highly Cited Papers, 5 featured on journal covers, and 2 selected as HOT Green Chemistry papers in 2022. Her work has garnered over 2,700 citations. Building on her contributions to the field, Dr. Sousa serves as Associate Editor for Reactive and Functional Polymers (Elsevier) and is an editorial board member for journals like Sustainable Chemistry and Pharmacy and Sustainable Chemistry for the Environment (Elsevier). She actively coordinates and participates in numerous European research projects, including Hop On ABSolEU HE, CEEC Grant (2020.02322.CEECIND), CICECO’s POWER award (2022), and the MIT-Portugal project (MIT-EXPL/ISF/0021/2017). Since 2019, she has chaired the European interdisciplinary network FUR4Sustain (CA18220), a collaboration of over 100 experts across 59 institutions in 30 countries.

Ana M. Gil obtained her PhD in Chemistry at the University of East Anglia, UK, in 1992. She is currently Associate Professor with “Habilitation” at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and a member of CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. Her main research interests are centered in NMR metabolomics, applied to biological systems (biofluids, intact tissue, tissue/material systems, 2D/3D cell cultures) subjected to disease (cancer, prenatal diseases, rare metabolic diseases, degenerative diseases), therapeutics, toxicological, environmental stresses, or differentiation cues (stem cell metabolism), for identification of novel biomarkers with possible clinical use. Other interests relate to environmental and food research areas, namely the use of metabolomics in nutritional studies (biofluids and gut microflora) to assess the effect of new diets, and in the development of new food products or food quality control processes. In terms of mentoring, her track record is (Mar2022): 10 Postdocs finished and 1 ongoing; 12 PhD theses finished (8 as supervisor, 4 as co-supervisor) and 8 ongoing; 22 Master theses finished and 3 ongoing; Other researchers: 13 completed and 1 ongoing. She has published (Mar2022) ca. 150 SCI papers, 26 book chapters, ca. 30 other papers, and presented ca. 270 conference communications (98 talks, including 42 invited talks; 170 posters). Her metrics are (Mar2022): h-index=46, 5950 citations (source: Scopus).
